Childcare @ St Swithun’s rated “Outstanding”

Childcare @ St Swithun’s on Arncliffe Road has recently been rated as “outstanding” by Ofsted.  The report released on 3rd April praises the “warm, welcoming and safe environment” and the “rich and varied range of activities and experiences” provided.

Our pre-school was rated “outstanding” across the board on the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development and leadership and management.  Little learners develop confidence, independence and secure attachments at Childcare @ St Swithun’s.  The staff support them in countless ways, whether with physical development through sports and playing with dough, or building language skills with action rhymes and story time.

The provision for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) is highlighted as “exceptional”.  With more children presenting with SEND, this support has never been more needed.  St Swithun’s works together with parents and other professionals to devise targeted strategies and support for children with SEND.   This includes anything from visual timetables to regular one-to-one sessions.  Each child receives informed, on-going support to help them reach their potential.

The team were also praised for their work with their community.  For example, the children regularly visit a community garden to plant the flowers they have grown and learn about nature.  Trips to visit local parks and other Wakefield landmarks are arranged.  The children also receive visits from the fire service and ambulance crew.  Staff work in partnership with parents from families where English is an additional language.  They learn key words in the families’ home language and include children’s cultures and traditions in the curriculum planning.  These varied experiences help to shape children’s understanding of the community in which they live.

Building relationships with parents is key to the team’s success, and shown in the exceptional feedback parents gave to the Ofsted inspector.  Childcare @ St Swithun’s provides daily updates and photos, and regular meetings are also provided.  The team share home learning ideas help to fully involve parents in their children’s learning.  On-site family support is also available to help parents access funding, support and advice and information about other local services.

We’re delighted by this positive report. It really reflects the hard work of the team and the strong relationships we build with families. The managers Sue and Cath lead Childcare @ St Swithun's with passion and care.
