St George’s is delighted to announce that we have been granted funds as part of the national Know Your Neighbourhood Scheme, delivered through the National Lottery Community Fund. We are one of a number of organisations across 27 areas of the UK identified to receive funding to increase participation in volunteering and tackle loneliness.
Local people were consulted as part of our application for funding, and your ideas have inspired the plans to run a variety of food and fitness activities such as a Pop-up Restaurant, Fake Away Masterclass, Connecting Cultures Cuisine, Zumba around the World, Fitness through Self-Defence and Walk, Talk, Cycle Saturdays, alongside local trips and visits to support friendship and fitness. The team hopes these community activities will increase people’s sense of connection, allow them to build up their confidence and develop skills for life.

Jade Wright, Engagement & Partnerships Service Manager, said, “We’re excited to have this opportunity to work with local people to develop new activities based on their interests, skills and aspirations.”
Community members may have been lucky enough to see some of these benefits recently, as some of the Know Your Neighbourhood funding supported the recent Friday Funday which ran in May half-term and offered families all the fun of the fair. The event was a great success thanks to the community’s participation and support from a number of local groups including Brothers Grimm, Car Synergy, Cross Lane Barbers, Dynamic Cheerleaders, George-A-Green Fisheries, our local PCSOs, St George’s Church, TrustFord Wakefield and WHD.
The Know Your Neighbourhood sessions will work alongside a new befriending service working with local volunteers to develop links with people who might feel isolated or out of the loop with what’s happening in the area.
Anyone interested in taking part in activities at St George’s – whether as a participant or a volunteer – can contact St George’s on 01924 369631 or by emailing info@stgeorgeslpset.org.uk.
