One-Stop Pop-Up Round-Up

Despite the grey and blustery start, it was all hands on deck Friday 2nd February at St George’s as we hosted the first “One-Stop Pop-Up” event at our community centre.  Around 9am our comms officer Anne was spotted using obscene amounts of blue-tack to secure outdoor signage, and a steady stream of colleagues from across the district appeared windblown but cheerful at reception, banners and freebies in hand.  By 10am we were open for business and the inviting smell of bacon drew people into the hall – wellbeing worker Kaye having swapped cooking the three-course Lunch Club dinner for making hot sandwiches with café queen Kirsty.

In addition to offering delicious, free sandwiches, the event brought together local organisations with knowledge on a range of topics including housing, finances, health, social groups, bills, family, jobs, pets, benefits, wellbeing and more – allowing locals to access a variety of support on their doorstep.

“When you’re experiencing difficulties things can quickly feel overwhelming, and finding the right support can seem like an uphill battle.  Our aim with the “One-Stop Pop-Ups” is to give people the chance to find out what support is available and access information and advice all in one place…
It’s also a great opportunity for organisations to network and keep up-to-date with local services.  There really is so much out there!”

We’re delighted that all the organisations that fed back afterwards said the event was well organised, welcoming and gave them an opportunity to provide information or support to a range of attendees.

“It was an excellent opportunity to network with other organisations in a relaxed and informal setting. I have been to different events where the atmosphere is too formal and the result is people don't interact; at St George's just the right balance is created.”

If you’d like to learn more about some of these services, click on the links or check out the videos below – some teams kindly took the time to chat with Anne about their work, the event and living and working in Wakefield before wrapping up.

Missed out on a stall or attending this session?  We have another arranged for Monday 29th April, 11am-3pm.  To request a stall or find out more please contact us on 01924 369631 or email info@stgeorgeslupset.org.uk.
